How many photos in a funeral presentation?

One of the most frequently asked questions when creating a farewell presentation: how many photos should I use? The answer depends on the music duration and how long each photo should be displayed.

The rule of thumb

A good guideline is 6-10 seconds per photo. This gives enough time to view the photo without it becoming boring.

With The Last Farewell, photos are automatically distributed over the duration of the music. You don't need to do any calculations yourself.

Calculation table

Below is an overview of the number of photos for different music durations:

4 minutes40 photos30 photos24 photos
5 minutes50 photos37 photos30 photos
6 minutes60 photos45 photos36 photos

What is the ideal length?

Most funeral presentations last 4 to 6 minutes. This fits well within the service and maintains attention.

Shorter than 3 minutes often feels too rushed — there's little room for reflection.

Longer than 7 minutes can lose attention, unless the images are very varied.

Quality over quantity

It's better to have 30 strong photos than 60 mediocre ones. Select photos that:

  • Evoke a memory
  • Show the character of your loved one
  • Vary in period and mood
  • Are sharp and well-lit

Unsure about a photo? Ask yourself: would I show this photo to someone to describe my loved one? If not, leave it out.

Multiple music tracks

If you use multiple tracks, you can maintain a different pace per track:

  • Calm track: longer display time (8-10 seconds)
  • Upbeat track: shorter display time (5-7 seconds)

What if I have too many photos?

It's normal to collect more photos than you ultimately use. Make a broad selection and then cut:

  1. Duplicates (multiple photos of the same moment)
  2. Blurry or dark photos
  3. Photos where your loved one doesn't look good
  4. Photos without emotional value

Frequently asked questions

Does a title slide count?

Yes, a title slide with name and dates also takes up time. Allow 5-10 seconds for this.

Can I add videos?

Yes, short video clips can enrich the presentation. Keep them short (10-30 seconds) to maintain the flow.

What if the funeral home has a maximum number of photos?

Some homes have a maximum. Ask about this in advance. With The Last Farewell, you can always adjust the presentation.
